Our natural teeth may require restoration or replacement for many reasons. The need to change the appearance or function of our teeth may arise from unsightly discolouration, progressive failure of earlier restorations, the consequences of gum recession and breakdown, physical injury or for developmental reasons. The principal cause of tooth loss in adults is untreated Periodontitis (gum disease). Dental decay (caries) is also a major cause of damage and loss of teeth. The aim of prosthodontic treatment is to provide the optimum restoration or replacement of missing or damaged teeth and maintain the long-term health of the entire dentition. Treatment addresses function and aesthetics.
